Helford Gig Club hosted their ‘Mini Scillies’ regatta last Saturday and FMPGC’s Pinnacle and Zawn were entered.

It was a chance to test our racing muscles ahead of the 3 Rivers event next weekend at Caradon but over the shorter Scilly-like distances.

It’s a new season and all the FMPGC crews have new faces and lineups this year. Alongside last year’s mainstays, Paddy & Andy Blake, Paul Smith and Mike Griffin, our Men’s Vets have Barry Churcher and Neil Rogers back in the boat. Our Men’s A crew consists of most rowers from last year’s B crew. Ladies A now have two previous Falmouth Gig Club World Champions in the stroke and number 5 seats with Jenny Shipley & Liz Fernie having joined FMPGC this season, along with Kirsty Anthony Johns who previously rowed for Bristol but has recently moved back to live in Flushing. Ladies B have welcomed back previous club rowers Polly Tonkins and Jodie Hocking to their crew this year.

So with new lineups all round it was going to be interesting to see how everyone did at Helford last weekend.

The conditions were quite benign in contrast to what had been forecast and some good racing was had by all. The longer open races taking around 10 or 11 minutes to complete, with the shorter ‘sprint’ finals about 8 to 10 minutes.

We’d walked away with some trophies last year but some stronger competition entered the event this time including Newquay, Falmouth and Roseland. Roseland won some of the races on Saturday but were disqualified for being over the line. Our Ladies A suffered the same penalty despite finishing 3rd in the Open Final. Newquay went on to win the Ladies Vets and Open. Whilst Falmouth Men won the Men’s Vets and Open.
