Lottery funding and lots of hard work from Lynn, Frances, Ella, Rob, Penny, Claire and various children’s parents throughout the 2012 season, culminated in 3 FMPGC Junior crews completing last weekend’s Helford River Race. All finished the race, despite it taking some of them over an hour. In use were our Skiff and flashboat plus a borrowed giglet from Helford Gig Club.
Isaac, Fraser, Milo and Hugo were coxed by Bertie and finished first out of our Juniors in just under 50 minutes. These boys are probably our most experienced but have never rowed over such a distance before. Their determination certainly paid off and they are already looking forward to more CRA racing next year.
Jamie, Mattie and Ky were in the giglet along with Penny. Coxed by Lynn, they surprised everyone with their competitive spirit and they finished only just behind the flashboat juniors.
Millie, Bethan & Lola were in the skiff; only Millie having much experience to date. Without a cox to help with steering, they did incredibly well and kept motivated throughout, finishing in around an hour overall. They will certainly be a force to be reckoned with in the future!
Cheered on by the many club members who came out to support, both on the water and on the finish line, they all seemed to have really enjoyed the experience. Up at the gig club after, they were quite rightly singled out for their achievements and the flashboat crew won cups for winning the junior event.
