FMPGC have been chosen to receive nearly £50,000 in money towards the building of a new gig shed in Flushing, from the Sport England ‘Inspired Facilities’ award scheme. A huge club effort in the autumn of 2011 to apply for the money and get the necessary planning permission to build this long-dreamed of building has now, literally, been paid off.
Saturday saw the official presentation of the Lottery Funding ‘cheque’ by Andrew Hanson of Sport England. MP Sarah Newton was also there to acknowledge the Olympic legacy that such Lottery funding will encourage. Those involved in the grant application are pictured, alongside some of the youngest members of the club who will hopefully benefit from the facilities in the years to come.
The gig shed will store all three of the club’s boats, in a dry covered building – something which, to date, has not been possible. There will also be, hitherto non-existent, toilet facilities. The shed will replace the current gig ‘pen’ which is not adequate to guarantee the longevity of our boats or ensure the future of the club. With new facilities for every section of our rowing community and ever-improving race results, FMPGC now has a very exciting few months and years ahead!
