First race of the 2008 season was on 16-Mar, the 3 Rivers Race hosted by Caradon Gig Club. Well done to all crews who took part in the blustery and long river row starting and finishing under the Tamar bridges. We took two ladies crews and one mens crew. With so many crews taking part (30 ladies, 35 mens), racing was started with one heat following the other after a minute or so.
Ladies (A and “C-Gulls”) were first off and both put in excellent performances finishing 8th and 16th respectively out of 30 crews. The C-Gulls were comfortably the fastest crew from the 2nd heat to start and overhauled 5 or 6 from the heat in front. Ladies A completed the course in 55:19, C-Gulls in 59:50. Places 5,6,7 and 8 were less than 60 secs apart after nearly an hours racing!
Mens A were our only mens crew to go and finished an excellent 6th from 35 crews just 6 seconds behind a strong Caradon crew in Mary Newman. Following a slightly dodgy start, the guys powered up the first leg and overtook 6 boats, nearly passing Mary Newman but ran out of room approaching the first turns and tucked in behind to take a better line into the marks. It remained nip and tuck for the next 30 minutes and a strong finish held off Speedwell (5secs) and Pilgrim (7secs). Overall time 48:30 – over a minute faster than last year over the same course.
A great start to the season, some really tight racing and should make for some excellent spectacles in the coming season. All crews can now look forward to putting their months of hard winter training into practice in the upcoming World Championships.
